Why WhatsApp Web doesn’t show your old messages
WhatsApp on a computer is a linked device. When you link it, your phone sends it a copy of your most recent message history, not all of it, so older messages often don’t appear there. The full history stays on your phone. To see, search or export the whole chat, use WhatsApp on your phone.
Your phone has the history. The computer has a copy.
WhatsApp Web, the Mac app and the Windows app all work the same way: they’re linked devices, tied to the WhatsApp account on your phone. Right after you link one, your phone sends it an end-to-end encrypted copy of your most recent message history, and the computer stores that copy locally. Depending on how many messages you have, it can take a few minutes to appear.
The key word is recent. WhatsApp’s help page on linked devices says not all messages and chats are synced from your phone, that WhatsApp Desktop syncs more history than WhatsApp Web, and that to see or search your full history, you should check your phone.
So when you scroll up in a chat on your laptop and it simply stops, nothing is broken and nothing was deleted. The computer only ever received part of the chat.
How much does a computer get?
WhatsApp doesn’t publish a fixed number. Its help page does mention a known issue where some linked devices don’t show up to one year of chat history, and says your full history is still on your primary device in the meantime.
In practice it can be much less. In WholeThing’s own testing, the same chat covered 92 days when exported from a Mac, and nearly three years when exported from the phone it belonged to. Treat a computer as holding the recent part of a chat, often only the last few months, and don’t count on more.

Why it matters when you export a chat
An export can only contain what the device has. Pull a chat from a computer and you get the synced part, packed into a file that looks exactly like a full export. Nothing in it says the first two years are missing.
For reading a conversation, that’s the part that hurts. The patterns worth seeing are the long ones: the week things changed, which WholeThing only looks for across at least 12 weeks; how reply times moved from one period to the next; the longest silence and who broke it. A few recent months can’t show how any of those compare with the start.
That’s why WholeThing’s export screen says, before anything else: do this on your phone. And it’s why the app shows a receipt with the months a chat covers before it counts anything. If the dates start later than you remember, check where the file came from.
When old messages are missing on your phone too
Sometimes the history isn’t on the phone either. The usual reasons, all from WhatsApp’s own help pages:
- A new phone without a restore. Your chat history isn’t stored on WhatsApp’s servers, so WhatsApp can’t restore it for you. It only comes back from a backup (on iPhone, iCloud) or a transfer from your old phone, and a restore needs the same phone number and iCloud account the backup was made with.
- Disappearing messages. When they’re on, new messages disappear 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days after they’re sent, unless someone keeps them. In a one-to-one chat either of you can turn this on.
- Deleted messages. A message deleted for yourself or for everyone is deleted on all your devices, not just one.
- Restricted chat. If someone in the chat turned it on, the chat can’t be used on linked devices at all, and nobody in it can export it.
None of these can be undone from a computer. If the messages aren’t on your phone and there’s no backup, they aren’t anywhere WhatsApp can reach.
How to get the whole chat
First, check what your phone has. Open the chat and scroll up to the very first message: that’s where an export from this phone will start. If it starts later than you remember, the older messages aren’t on this phone, and the section above covers the likely reasons. If the history is there, getting all of it out takes a minute:

- Yes. WhatsApp’s help page says Desktop syncs more message history than Web. Neither is promised your full history; that’s on your phone.

- WhatsApp doesn’t describe a way to. Its advice is to check your phone to see or search your full history.
- Are my old messages stored on WhatsApp’s servers?
- No. WhatsApp says your chat history isn’t stored on its servers, which is why it can only come back from your own backup.
- Why did WhatsApp on my computer log me out?
- WhatsApp logs out linked devices if you don’t use your phone for over 14 days, and disconnects a linked device after 30 days of inactivity.
